Photographers of the Transalpine-Run: Stephan Repke - The Gripmaster
I am a professional photographer and cameraman, running in the Salomon Trailrunning Team. I actually got into trailrunning through my photography. When, in the end of the 90’s, Salomon began making shoes especially for adventure and expedition racing, I was covering those events around the world as a sports photographer. Back then, one basically had the choice between white sneakers and incredibly heavy trekking boots.
I was a mountainbike racer in those days, and wouldn’t have been caught running even in a pitch dark night. But the things I saw in the Himalayas and in the Atlas Mountains somehow inspired me. More>>

Dear Transalpine runners – and all those who want to become one...
Even longer, even higher = even better? Just by taking a look at the statistics for this year’s GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run you’ll get cramp in your calf muscles: Nearly 296 kilometers in distance and about 17,700 meters of elevation gain, run in stages over eight days – how is that possible? Even experienced transalpine runners might find these figures somewhat alarming.
Nevertheless, when we planned the new route the intention wasn’t to make the run even more difficult but rather to make it more exciting and more interesting – quite simply to make it even better! After all, that’s exactly what makes the challenge of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run so special. It is always great fun, despite the physical exertion. It offers spectacular views of stunning mountain scenery, presenting runners with a new challenge every day of the run while offering them the experience of a lifetime as they run along the best trails in the Alps.
So, have fun training and make sure you stay clear of injuries.
Keep on running!

Team Sexten Salomon fancies:
Lee (Elisabeth) Egarter and Martina Pfeifhofer have enjoyed great success and experience working as a team in the two last Transalpine-Run events. They have run in 2008 on the east route as well as 2009 on the west route, taking out 2nd place in the WOMEN category both years. These true Outdoor-Girls agree: with the trans-alpine run the placing is not the most important part of the event, rather the experience. How many people can say that they have crossed the Alps by FOOT? Anyone who has survived this knows that only where you have been by foot, that you have really been there!! This year Lee & Martina would like to share their expertise and experience gained during the last two years with others. There will be available a total of 3 TRAILRUNNING-CAMPS held in Sexten:

a training camp TRANSALPINE RUN as a preparation for the TAR 2010 from the 12th to the 19th of June, 2010

+++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 8
Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens win the 5th
GORE-TEX ® Transalpine-Run beating previous records
The two British racers Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens of Team ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor’ won today’s last stage of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine- Run 2009 from Schlanders to Latsch, Italy. As if victory wasn’t enough, they also set a new record on the 28.62 kilometer-long course in the mind-boggling time of 02:46:51.8 hours. The ‘British Blitz’ team also managed to beat the overall record for the entire course of almost 240 kilometers distance and a vertical gain of roughly 15,000 meters. In total, they spent 24:02:47.2 hours on the trails of the Western course through its eight stages. More>>

The last 28.62!
It’s almost done! The participants of the 5th GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run are face their last challenging stage today. They’ll have to master another 28.62 kilometers and a vertical gain of 1,817 meters before taking off their worn running shoes for good tomorrow. The highlight of the stage is the Göflaner Scharte, a scenic pass in the Ortler Range that affords stunning views over 270 degrees. On the descent via Kreuzjöchl, the racers will run much steep single-track before reaching the vineyards along the valley bottom just before Latsch.

+++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 7
Symonds + Owens simply unbeatable / New records
established across highest pass of the race
To say that Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens rushed it to the finish line today would be yet another understatement– ‘blasting through the course’ would be a more accurate description of their performance. Despite a distance of 34.51 kilometers, a vertical gain of 2,004 meters and an even bigger vertical loss in their legs, the two British racers did not appear particularly exhausted upon arriving in Silandro after 03:34:46.0 hours.

Crossing the highest elevation of the race on the penultimate day
On the penultimate day of the 2009 GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run, the racers will be facing the highest elevation of the race, the Rappenscharte (3,012 m), a high alpine pass on either sides of which tough trail-less terrain has to be negotiated. The overall distance of 34.51 kilometers and a vertical gain of 2,004 meters will tire out even the top runners this far into the race. The stage will be merciless with an unrelenting, brutal descent but it will have several redeeming qualities – one being the exceptional panoramic views of the glaciated High Divide that also forms the border between Austria and Italy, another being the lush fruit orchards and fragrant oak/chestnut groves at lower elevation around Schlanders.

+++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 6
Symonds + Owen claim fifth stage victory / Steigmeier
withdraws / Other leader teams maintain lead
Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens of British Team ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor’ were back on track today pocketing another stage triumph. The overall leaders mustn’t have spent much time taking in the spectacular sights alongside the trail as they covered the distance of 37.02 kilometers between Scuol (SUI) and Mals (ITA) in just 03:09:14.0 hours. Thomas Geisenberger and Michael Veit of the German ‘Team Dr. Steinbauer’ (03:15:41.0 hours) claimed second place without a threat in sight. Seconds decided over third place, in contrast, as the Italians Michael Fischer and Roland Osele of ‘Telmekom Team Südtirol’ (03:21:01.4 hours) beat Bruno Jost and Urs Jenzer (‘Team Pedal-Fast Switzerland 1’, 03:31:04.3 hours) by a hair to the finish line. Sep 10, 2009 +++ Let’s go to South Tyrol
Today’s course may offer a bit of a reprieve with only 1,332 m of vertical gain but still will be a lengthy affair with its 37.02 kilometers. A highlight will be d’Unina Canyon with a gallery trail blasted high up sheer rock walls – nothing for the faint of heart although well secured with fixed steel cables. By crossing Schlinigpass (2261m) and Plantapatsch (2,108m) superb panorama views can be enjoyed before dropping into the cool forests of Val Venosta. Yet, the descent will be tedious as it is continuous and stretches out over nearly half of the stage distance. Yikes!
+++
Sep 9, 2009 +++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 5 Michael Fischer establishes new record in today’s uphill
sprint / ‘Telmekom Team Südtirol’ fastest teams
By design, the uphill sprint to Motta Naluns above Scuol, Switzerland, is meant to serve as a ‘restful’ interlude halfway through one of the toughest trail-running races out there. In comparison with any other stage this week, the course indeed is relatively benign maintaining a steady gradient and ascending ‘only’ 936 m over a distance of 6.19 kilometers. Yet, the racers tend to give it all on this occasion and hope to make up for lost time - in a hurry.
Michael Fischer of Northern Italy grabbed the opportunity at hand and was rewarded with first place in today’s ranking of individual runners for his record-busting time of 00:39:55.9 hours. As if this wasn’t enough in and by itself, the 29-year-old managed yet another upset with his teammate Roland Osele (00:42:33.8 hours): ‘Telmekom Team Südtirol’ was able to displace the hitherto unbeatable British team ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor’ from the top of the podium. Their former’s cumulative team time of 01:22:29.7 hours provided them with a narrow but decisive lead of 10 seconds over Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens (01:22:40.0 hours) who had to be content with an unfamiliar second place in today’s team ranking. Sep 9, 2009 +++ Uphill sprint race on the schedule!
Runners specializing on pure uphill races will be thrilled today. The uphill sprint to Motta Naluns (2,130 m asl) over a distance of 6.19 km and a vertical gain of 936 m will demand not just endurance and strength but also a lot of technique. The steep ascent over different surfaces will be short but extremely taxing – not exactly what one would ordinarily consider a rest day!

Sep 8, 2009 +++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 4 Britain’s Symonds and Owens continue victory series /
Leaders of all categories manage to defend their titles
The racers’ arrival in Scuol Switzerland marks the halfway mark on the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run with four stages down and an equal number still to come. Today held more of the same of experiences the runners have enjoyed already over the last few days: beautiful weather, exciting trails and phenomenal vistas! The British runners Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens of ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor’ seem to thrive on these conditions as they managed to claim a fourth consecutive stage victory (03:51:26.0 hours). Neither a vertical gain of 2,339 m nor a distance of 39.92 kilometers could slow them down – they simply deliver. More>>

Today's stage may decide the fate of quite a few teams. The runners face a distance of 39.92 km and two punishing ascents with a cumulative vertical of 2,339 m across the impressive Silvretta Range. The race will cross into Switzerland with what we expect to be perfect weather. The participants should be looking forward to the soothing thermal spa facilities Scuol is renowned for.

Sep 7, 2009 +++ STAGE RESULTS: Day3 Symonds & Owens enjoy more solitude ahead of the pack /
Leaders of all categories extend their leads / Dippacher & Stork forced to withdraw
For a third consecutive day Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens of ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor’ demonstrated manifest superiority in the Men’s category. They did not just win on today’s course between St. Anton / Arlberg and Galtür but also managed to establish a new stage record with their time of 03:43:56.0 hours. This performance effectively nipped ten minutes off the previous record established in 2007. The two ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor Team’ racers have extended their overall lead to nearly 50 minutes – a comfortable lead even with nearly two-thirds of the race still lying ahead. More>>

Sep 7, 2009 +++ Let’s go to Galtür
The third stage of the 2009 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run won’t exactly afford any respite. En route to Galtür the teams will take on a cumulative vertical ascent of 2,437 meters along a whooping distance of 32.97 kilometers. Two tough climbs followed by two equally challenging descents will tax most racers to the max. Luckily we’re expecting excellent weather since much of the stage will be well above tree line.
+++
Sep 6, 2009 +++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 2 Symonds + Owens extend Men’s lead /
Close competition for podium positions in all race categories
Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens of Scotland left no doubt as to their superiority among the Men’s teams as – once again - they were first to dash across the finish line in the renowned resort community of St. Anton/Arlberg today. The two athletes of ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor Team’ deserve sporting their leader jerseys for a second day in a row as a just reward for covering the shortest of this week’s stages in no more than 02:39:54.2 hours. This sensational achievement becomes all the more palpable if one considers that the next two teams, not exactly known as slouches from previous races, wouldn’t arrive for another ten minutes. More>>

Sep 6, 2009 +++ Stage 2 from Lech / Arlberg to St. Anton is running
Compared to yesterday, today seems to be a little bit more relaxed. However, this doesn’t mean easier as the shortest stage (24.63 km) of the 2009 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run is still demanding. Two-thirds of the day will be in the high alpine above 2,000 m in elevation. Several trail less stretches and many trail sections should stretch out the field a bit more. A running highlight undoubtedly will be the Valluga Arête (2,750 m), the fourth highest elevation to take this year.

Sep 5, 2009 +++ STAGE RESULTS: Day 1 Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens win inaugural stage /
Well known faces leading all other race categories
Andrew Symonds and Tom Owens, first-timers at the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run, simply ran at breakneck speed and handily claimed victory on the first day of the 8-day stage race. The two Scottish racers of ‘Saab Salomon Outdoor Team’ mustn’t have wasted much time on the trails today as they covered the distance of 35,03 km and a breathtaking vertical ascent of 2,543 m in just 03:35:09.3 hours. Their closest pursuers, Thomas Geisenberger and Michael Veit of ‘Team Dr. Steinbauer’ had to hand them a lead of nearly one quarter of an hour (03:49:56.0). July 7, 2009 +++ This year starting as married couple
The honeymoon team from 2008 will start this year, for now the last time, at the 5th GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run 2009, before they allow themselves some calm with a “boring” beach holiday and lots of cocktails.
Like many of you still know from last year, Kathrin and Christian Schichtl met at the 2nd GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run 2006 and with the 4th GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run in 2008 they had their advanced honeymoon as “honeymoon team”. After they survived the combined challenge – both simply lost some toenails – they got married on 3rd of December 2008. A specific memory for both was the surprise some of the run-colleagues prepared – they allocated a food stand in Transalpine-Run-style in front of the chapel.
