David Lopez and Miguel Caballero overall champions of the 2011 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run / Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds claim last stage victory / Veteran Master team claims champion trilogy

Miguel Caballero und David LopezDavid Lopez and Miguel Caballero have won the 2011 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run. The two 29-year-old trail experts of Spanish Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® covered the monstrous distance of 273.73 kilometers and a cumulative ascent of 15,436 meters in astonishing 26:37:51.0 hours.
Trailing the overall victors by merely 17 minutes after eight intense days of trail running are Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds of Scottish Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear (26:54:18.5). The finishing touch of their race performance, however, was not just a well-deserved second place position in the overall ranking but today’s stage victory well ahead of any other team (2:50:26.9).
Julien Chorier (FRA) and Philipp Reiter (GER) of Team Salomon International ended the globally recognized trail running event in third place overall after a total of 27:54:37.2 hours on the trail. After logging a distance of 30.2 kilometers today that packed 1,807 meters into a single sustained climb, the two racers even managed to come in second (3:02:33.1) ahead of the Spanish overall race champions.
For the first time in its seven-year history, a Spanish team made up of members of the National Trail Running team, won the Transalpine-Run. “It’s simply an incredible feeling right now. We are overjoyed that we ended up winning the race as first-time participants” shared Miguel Caballero who was clearly the stronger of the two team members on the last two stages. Apparently, his teammate “David started experiencing an increasingly upset stomach. That ended up costing valuable time,” said Caballero. “In view of that, our overall victory ended up being a real piece of work.” More>>

Symonds and Lennox dethrone Spaniards / Injury forces Women leaders to give up and quit from race / Victorious home run for local Masters Team Schlanders

Joe Symonds und Jethro Lennox

Miro und Jimenez

Joe Symonds and Jethro Lennox of Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear delivered the evidence today that the hitherto dominant Spanish leaders of Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® are not entirely invincible. The Scottish racers mastered today’s stage from Mals to Schlanders across the infamous Rappenscharte (3,012 m) in 3:42:52.8 hours – quite a feat since the course packed no less than 36.90 kilometers and a whooping vertical gain of 2.063 meters. Already in second place in the overall ranking, Joe Symonds and Jethro Lennox took a huge bite out of the Spanish dominators’ sizeable lead today reducing it by nearly 14 minutes. Yet, it is far too early to write off today's third ranked Miguel Caballero Ortega and David Lopez Castan (3:56:34.2) who may have shown a chink in their armor but still book nearly one half hour over Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear with only one short stage to go. Six in a row - Miguel Caballero and David Lopez don't waste any time getting to Italy / Masters Holger Finkelmann and Marco Schneider celebrate first victory

Miguel Caballero und David Lopez Day after day, Miguel Caballero Ortega and David Lopez Castan keep demonstrating their dominance in the 2011 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run. The two Spaniards of Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® made it to Mals in the Italian Val Venosta in no more than 3:14:26.9 hours – a stunning accomplishment given the distance of 37.02 kilometers and 1,332 meters of vertical gain en route.
Possibly, their performance had something to do with runner-up Team Salomon International who challenged the leaders for much of today's stage relentlessly rushing them on to the finish line. However, second-placing Julien Chorier and Philipp Reiter (3:15:24.6) eventually ended up trailing the leaders by a single minute after courageously taking the lead for much of the day.
Third to call it a day were Tofol Castaner Bernat and Miquel Capo Soler of Team TransMallorcaRun who added to Spanish runners' pride by claiming the remaining podium position after 3:19:30.2 hours. More>>

Miguel Caballero crushes previous stage record in today's mountain sprint / Fifth consecutive stage victory for Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® / Mireia Miro furiously fast among Women

Miguel Caballero Mireia Miro Miguel Caballero Ortega grew wings in today’s uphill race from Scuol’s town square to the plateau of Motta Naluns (2.130m) high above the Swiss spa community. His time of 38.57,6 minutes beat the previous, two-year-old record of Italian Michael Fischer by nearly a full minute. By the end of the day, the new record secured Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® first place in today’s stage. Race partner David Lopez Castan had not been in the best shape today finishing the race himself in 44:01.2 minutes. However, no other team managed to beat the Spaniards cumulative time of 1:22:58.8 hours.
The victorious Caballero clearly benefited in today’s 6,19 kilometer uphill sprint race from fellow countryman Tofol Castaner Bernat, the 2010 Sky Running World Champion. Castaner, who claimed second place today with teammate Miquel Capo Soler of Team TransMallorcaRun (1:25:38.7) had served as an ideal, albeit unintentional, pacer for Caballero. More>>

Lopez and Caballero prove unbeatable four days into the Transalpine-Run / Downhill skills determine podium positions / Overall leaders continue to defend their vanguard standing across all categories

Stephanie Jimenez (FRA) und Mireia Miro (ESP) It almost seems a daily routine by now that David Lopez Castan and Miguel Caballero Ortega lead the field of racers into the finish area at the 2011 GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run. For the 4th day in a row, the two members of the Spanish National trail running team clearly dominated the race, reaching Scuol almost seven minutes ahead of the second-fastest team. Castan and Ortega, recognizable by their bright blue leader jerseys by now, covered today’s 39,93 kilometers and 2,339 meters of altitudinal gain en route to Switzerland in 4:06:46.8 hours.
Their most immediate threat, Scottish Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear, took 4:13:40.6 hours on the trail between Galtür and Scuol (SUI). Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds’ attempts to break the dominance of the Spaniards all seem to have failed to date. Third to arrive in the spa community of Scuol were once again Julien Chorier (FRA) and Philipp Reiter (GER) with a time of 4:19:54.7 hours. More>>

Overall Leaders unbeatable as they outpace competitors / Third consecutive victory for Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® Spain / Leaders of all other categories defend top ranks

Lopez und CaballeroDavid Lopez Castan and Miguel Caballero Ortega once again ruled today's field of runners! As on both previous stages, they managed to distance themselves from any immediate competition halfway into the day and from then on simply ran their own race. The two Spanish talents put the full marathon distance between Schruns and Galtür behind them with seeming ease in the mind-blowing time of 3:49:47.7 hours. While today's course had been changed to account for potential thunderstorm activity and avoided any exposed ridgeline trails in favour of a lower elevation route, the day still packed a punch.
Trailing the Spanish leaders by ten minutes were - as would have been expected by now - Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds of Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear. The Scottish missed staying under the four-hour mark by a mere second with their time of 4:00:01.6 hours, but still rank second overall at this point. More>>

Spaniards Lopez Castan and Caballero Ortega claim second stage victory at the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run

Kleinwalsertal/Hirschegg nach Schruns David Lopez Castan and Miguel Caballero Ortega, the overall leaders at this point, added yet another victory on today's mammoth stage between Kleinwalsertal/Hirschegg (Austria) and Schruns (Austria). Little over five hours (5:01:25.0) was all the speedy Spaniards spent on the trails, putting no less than 53,20 kilometers and 2,481 meters in several grueling ascents behind them. On account of these stats, today's stage was probably the toughest day for the remaining week of racing, but growing fatigue will unlikely make the ensuing stages feel any easier for any of the athletes.
Second across the finish line – trailing leading Team Trangoworld GORE-TEX® Spain by just under five minutes – were the Scottish runners Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds of Team Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear (5:06:14.9). The latter defended their position ahead of Julien Chorier (FRA) and Philip Reiter (GER) of Team Salomon International, whose time of 5:30:26.2 hours advanced them onto the podium in deserved third place. Spaniards dominate the First Stage of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run 2011 / Lopez Castan and Caballero Ortega capture the blue Leader Jerseys

David Lopez Castan und Miguel Caballero OrtegaA spanish win crowned a beautiful day on the first stage of the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run 2011. David Lopez Castan and Miguel Caballero Ortega of Trangoworld GORE-TEX® handled the 27.20 kilometers and 1,806 elevation meters from Oberstdorf, Germany, to Hirschegg/Kleinwalsertal, Austria, in 2:40:01.0 hours. Scottish runners Jethro Lennox and Joe Symonds from the Inov-8 GORE-TEX® Footwear team came in second with a little over 12 minutes behind (2:52:37.8). Reigning Mountain Running World Champion Tofol Castaner Bernat and his team partner Capo Soler Miquel of TransMallorcaRun took the third spot on today's podium (2:53:51.0).
Almost cloud-less skies and hot temperatures didn't seem to impress the two Spaniards Lopez Castan and Caballero Ortega, who not only claimed the blue leader-jerseys but really set the pace on today's comparatively easy stage on this world wide highly respected trail-running event. More>>

A short welcome from Jürgen + the Gore team

Jürgen + the Gore team Dear Transalpine Runners,
only two days to go before the start of the 7th GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run in Oberstdorf. Two days until the start of the best but also mots challenging event in the year for the Gore team. Why is that? Because ...

  • we get to meet exciting and interesting runners from 25 different countries, "old hands" as well as runners who are new to the race
  • it's always a week packed full of stories and emotions
  • trail runners are incredibly relaxed about their sport
  • we are absolutely sure that our friends from Plan B have done a great job once again and will do everything they can to make sure that you realise your dream of running over the Alps
  • we have so much fun ourselves, running over the Alps, each day with its own little adventures, unwinding in the evenings watching the pictures of the day with 600 other tired but satisfied athletes
It's going to be a tough week – for the event organisers from Plan B, for us as the sponsor of the event, and for you runners. The route is anything but easy and will push everyone to their limits. The team from Gore hope that you will go home after the week, perhaps slightly the worse for wear, but with lots of good memories, and perhaps you'll even have made some new friends. And hopefully you will have managed to finish the race! We'll do everything we can, to make sure you do: with alcohol-free beer after you cross the finishing line each day, a chance to win free massages, physiotaping, foot and shoe washing facilities, GORE-TEX® test products and a whole lot more. I look forward to seeing you all in Oberstdorf!

Keep on running!

Regards
Jürgen + the Gore team

After finishing TransAlp Bike, TransRockies Bike and TransRockies Run this year, Neil Rhodes will end his incredible season with the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run!

Neil RhodesI arrived back in the UK this morning, having successfully completed race 3 of 4, so one more to complete, THE TRANSALPINE RUN. My 'challenge', to be 'King of the Mountains' is to complete the TransAlpine Bike, the TransRockies Bike, the TransRockies Run and the Transalpine-Run. The statistics are; 4 races, 930miles (1,506k) of mountains, 180,608ft (54,729m) of ascent, 6 countries, 2 Continents, 8 weeks……….one pair of legs.
Completing all 4 races will be 2 'World Firsts', the first person to complete both Rockies races, back to back and the first person to Mountain bike and run across both Mountain ranges in an 8week period. Completing both the Rockies races has been attempted before, but they athletes were not successful. I have now completed both of those races, finishing the TransRockies Run, last Friday (26th). So I look forward to my 6th Transalpine-Run, meeting old friends and making new friends. I'm sure that Wolfi will give me a test of my endurance that I will remember all my life, (sometimes I wish he'd give me an easy day).

A few question to Kelvin Trautman from South Afrika who will take pictures of this year's TAR

Kelvin Trautman Hometown: Durban, South Africa

Trail running shoes: Salomons

Favorite place to trail run: The coastal bush below my house.

Years as a pro photographer: 4 years

Camera equipment: Nikon

What do you enjoy shooting most: Anything with a story. My job is to be a story teller after all. And if I looked hard at why I enjoy what I do, I'd say it's finding ways, angles, creativeness to convey to other people what is going on in front of my lens.

What do you like about trail running photography: The scenery, especially the Alps - makes my job as a photographer easy. The people. Trail runner's don't have ego's, they're all such an approachable, grounded and like-minded bunch. And lastly, the fact that I often get to run and photograph my trail running subjects. Its the best of both worlds.

UltraRunning Magazine: International Adventure - Transalpine-Run
UltraRunning MagazineOur adventure began in the fall of 2007 when an article about the GORE-TEX® Transalpine-Run inspired my wife, Laney, and she insisted we run it. I reminded her that I had just run my first marathon the previous year, and that she had never run more than 13 miles. I thought she was being ridiculous and suggested that maybe she should at least run a marathon before signing on for eight days and 180 miles of alpine terrain. She promptly signed up for one, and we were committed. More on www.ultrarunning.com>>

Jörg Schreiber and Gerald Blumrich take part in the race for Trail Magazine
Trail-MagazinJörg Schreiber and Gerald Blumrich already took part in the GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN for Trail Magazine very successfully one year ago. After all, they made first place in the Senior Masters category on last year's Eastern Route. "Last year's race couldn't have gone better for us and we won't be able to top that. We hope for this year, too, that we'll make it through without any injuries, falls, etc., and to experience a great week together with the other teams." That's what the team of Trail Magazine expects for the 7. GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN. An occasional stage victory, podium finish, or top 20 result, however, is among the things Jörg and Gerald wish to achieve. Only in February have the two done a speed climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. "That was again proof for us that we work well together with regard to fitness and personality," says Gerald getting to the heart of the matter. More>>

Team HIGH5 - Rookies at the GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN
Team HIGH5As a runner and frequent participant of orientation runs, trail running is really perfect for me. The Transalpine-Run being the "royal discipline" of trail running, it seems just natural that the day would that it would pop up on my running agenda. I have known Christian for many years, we've been to many training camps together (Flagstaff, Texel, Portugal, Italy) and competed in many events for the TV Wattenscheid. More>>
